If you've spent any time in Japan, you've probably stood in a Don Quijote aisle at midnight wondering whether the price on that electric toothbrush is actually good, or walked past a Bic Camera wondering if you should just buy your laptop there instead. This guide cuts through the noise.
The 30-Second Answer
Go to Don Quijote if you need everyday household goods, snacks, beauty products, cheap luggage, or you're shopping late at night. Don't assume the price is the best available — check first.
Go to Bic Camera if you want a wide electronics selection, solid post-sale service, and you prefer a structured shopping environment with clear English signage at major locations.
Go to Yodobashi if you're buying high-ticket electronics or cameras and want to compare a massive inventory under one roof, especially at Akihabara. Prices are competitive and the store layout rewards methodical comparison shoppers.
Store Overviews
Don Quijote (ドン・キホーテ)
Known locally as "Donki," this chain operates roughly 700 stores across Japan, many open 24 hours. The product range is deliberately chaotic — electronics sit next to costume accessories, next to imported snacks, next to branded luggage at 30% off. Prices vary by location and by how recently stock was marked down. There is no single "Don Quijote price" for most items. The Majica card (store loyalty card) and the Don Quijote app frequently offer additional percentage-off coupons.
Bic Camera (ビックカメラ)
Bic Camera is a consumer electronics retailer with around 40 large-format stores, concentrated in major train station areas. The stores are organized and well-signposted. Bic Camera runs a points program (BIC POINT) that returns a percentage of purchases as store credit — typically 10% on standard electronics. Staff in popular tourist locations often speak basic English and the stores have staffed tax-free counters.
Yodobashi Camera (ヨドバシカメラ)
Despite the name, Yodobashi sells far more than cameras. The flagship Yodobashi-Akiba in Akihabara is one of the largest electronics retail spaces in the world. Like Bic Camera, Yodobashi runs a points system (Gold Point Card+) at approximately 10% return on electronics. Yodobashi also operates yodobashi.com, one of Japan's better online electronics stores, with same-day delivery in Tokyo in many cases.
–22, with some variation by location.

Comparison by Category
Price and Discounts
Don Quijote: Prices are inconsistent. Brand-name electronics at Donki are sometimes 5–15% cheaper than elsewhere, and sometimes not. Donki's real value is in its house-brand and bulk items, deeply discounted branded fashion, and clearance goods. For electronics, always check Kakaku.com (Japan's price comparison site) before buying — Donki occasionally wins, but not reliably.
Bic Camera and Yodobashi: Both chains operate price-match-adjacent policies and generally stay within a few percent of each other on major electronics. The points systems effectively function as a delayed discount. A 10% point return on a ¥100,000 laptop is a ¥10,000 store credit — meaningful if you shop there again. Yodobashi's prices on imported cameras and lenses are particularly competitive. Staff at both stores can sometimes negotiate a small additional discount on high-value purchases, especially if you are paying cash and forgoing points.
Tax-Free (免税) Shopping
All three chains participate in Japan's tax-free scheme for visitors, but the rules apply equally at all retailers — they are set by Japanese law, not by the store.
Who qualifies: Non-residents visiting Japan (temporary visitors on a tourist or short-stay visa). Long-term residents with a work or student visa generally do not qualify.
Minimum purchase: ¥5,000 (excluding tax) in a single store on a single day for most goods. General goods (日用品) such as food, beverages, cosmetics, and medicine have a separate ¥5,000 minimum and must be sealed in a bag you cannot open until you leave Japan.
What is not tax-free: Consumables used within Japan (food you eat here, medication you take here) are technically not eligible for tax-free status, though the mechanism is a sealed bag rather than an outright refusal. Services, restaurant meals, and transportation are excluded entirely.
The process: Bring your passport. At Don Quijote, tax-free counters are usually near the exit. At Bic Camera and Yodobashi, dedicated tax-free staff are available in major stores. Expect a wait of 5–20 minutes during peak hours. Your passport details are recorded and submitted electronically to Japanese customs. Keep the paperwork until you depart Japan.
Important: The tax-free rules changed significantly in 2024. If you have heard about changes to how purchases are tracked and penalties for consuming tax-free goods within Japan, that is accurate — Japan tightened enforcement. Confirm current conditions at the tax-free counter or on the official Japan Tourism Agency website before making assumptions.
Coupons
Don Quijote: The Majica app regularly issues percentage-off coupons (5–15% on selected categories). However, coupon exclusions are extensive — name-brand electronics, alcohol, tobacco, certain cosmetics, and sale items are frequently excluded. Read the exclusion list before assuming the coupon applies.
Bic Camera: Coupons are available through the Bic Camera app and occasionally through email newsletters. Exclusions similarly apply to already-discounted items and some electronics categories. Points are generally not stackable with coupons unless explicitly stated.
Yodobashi: Similar app-based coupon system. The Gold Point Card+ gives consistent points return even without separate coupons, which many regular shoppers prefer for its simplicity.
Payment Methods and Foreign Cards
All three chains accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express at most registers. JCB is also accepted. UnionPay acceptance has expanded at tourist-heavy Donki locations.
Contactless payments: IC card payments (Suica, PASMO) work at most registers at all three chains for general purchases. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other NFC payments are accepted at a growing number of locations — confirm at the register or look for the contactless symbol.
Cash: Japan remains heavily cash-friendly. Some Donki discounts or negotiated price drops at Bic/Yodobashi are cash-only. ATMs in 7-Eleven, Japan Post, and some convenience stores accept international cards.
Tax-free and card payment: Tax-free processing works with card payment at all three chains. You do not need to pay cash to get tax-free status.
Using Wise, Revolut, and Foreign FX Cards
Multi-currency cards such as Wise and Revolut are accepted wherever Visa or Mastercard is accepted — which covers all three chains. However:
Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) is a risk at some terminals. If the register offers to charge you in your home currency rather than yen, decline. Always pay in JPY.
Foreign transaction fees and exchange rates vary by card and change over time. Do not rely on rate figures from this article or any cached source — check your card provider's current fee schedule before your trip or purchase.
Wise and Revolut have historically offered favorable mid-market rates, but weekend rates and out-of-hours conversions sometimes differ. Verify before a large purchase.
Wait Times and Checkout Experience
Don Quijote: Checkout lines during peak hours (evenings, weekends, tourist seasons) can be long. Tax-free processing at Donki requires going to a separate counter, which adds time. Staff-to-customer ratios in busy stores can feel stretched.
Bic Camera: Major urban stores (Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Yurakucho) have dedicated English-friendly staff and structured tax-free counters. Waits at the tax-free counter during Golden Week or summer tourist season can reach 30+ minutes. Outside those periods, the process is usually under 10 minutes.
Yodobashi: Yodobashi-Akiba is a destination in itself and can be crowded on weekends. The multiple floors and dedicated product sections mean you may wait in product-specific checkout queues rather than a central register. Tax-free counters are clearly marked and generally efficient.
Scenario-Based Recommendations
You Are a Short-Term Tourist (1–2 Weeks)
Your priority is tax-free processing and trustworthy pricing on electronics or souvenirs. Bic Camera or Yodobashi for electronics — the price transparency, English support, and reliable tax-free process justify the slightly less chaotic experience compared to Donki. For omiyage (gifts), snacks, and affordable quirky purchases: Don Quijote, especially the large tourist-area branches.
You Live in Japan Long-Term (Work or Student Visa)
Tax-free does not apply to you. Focus on value. Yodobashi's online store (yodobashi.com) is one of Japan's most price-competitive electronics retailers with reliable same-day or next-day delivery in cities. For physical shopping, Bic Camera's BIC POINT and Yodobashi's Gold Point Card+ accumulate meaningfully over time. Don Quijote is excellent for late-night household essentials, imported goods, and seasonal discount finds — just price-check electronics before buying.
You Need Household Goods and Daily Consumables
Don Quijote is the obvious choice for volume, variety, and operating hours. Detergent, kitchen tools, storage, toiletries, cheap clothing, and imported food are all Donki strengths. Bic Camera and Yodobashi do not meaningfully compete here.
You Are Buying Electronics (Laptop, Camera, Phone, Appliances)
Compare Bic Camera and Yodobashi side by side — they are frequently within 1–2% of each other. Yodobashi-Akiba has the deepest camera and lens inventory in Japan and arguably in Asia. For Apple products, both chains are authorized resellers. For mid-range Android phones, check both. Don Quijote's electronics selection is spottier; you may find a good deal, but the selection is thinner and the after-sale support is not comparable.
Notes Worth Knowing
T Point → V Point migration (2024): T Point and V Point merged into a unified V Point program in 2024. If you held a T Point card, your points were migrated. Bic Camera accepts V Point (formerly T Point) as a payment method at registers. Confirm the current terms at the register or on the V Point website, as co-branded integrations continue to evolve.
SIM cards: All three chains sell prepaid SIM cards for tourists and residents. However, SIM selection, activation support, and pricing vary significantly by retailer and by carrier. A dedicated comparison of carriers such as IIJmio, Rakuten Mobile, GTN, and others is outside the scope of this article — see JapanLifeStart's SIM card guide for a full breakdown.
Price matching: Don Quijote does not operate a formal price-match policy. Bic Camera and Yodobashi informally match prices between each other in some cases, particularly on high-ticket items — it is worth asking at the sales counter, especially for purchases above ¥50,000.
Store hours: Donki's 24-hour advantage is real and useful. Bic Camera and Yodobashi generally close by 21
Receipts and returns: Return policies in Japan are more restrictive than in many Western countries. Opened electronics are generally non-returnable or subject to restocking fees. Confirm the return policy at the time of purchase, especially if buying as a gift.
