Japan Tax-Free Shopping in 2026: Who Qualifies & How to Save

Tax-free shopping can remove the applicable consumption tax on eligible purchases in Japan, provided you meet the requirements. The system changes for purchases made on or after November 1, 2026. Here's the plain-English version, plus how to combine tax-free with coupons and avoid hidden card fees.

Quick answer: can you shop tax-free in Japan?

• Foreign visitors with temporary-visitor status: generally eligible if they are non-residents, have been in Japan for less than six months since entry, and meet the purchase and export requirements.
• Ordinary foreign residents living in Japan: generally not eligible just because they have a foreign passport or will take a trip abroad. Coupons, points, and low-fee payment may still help (see below).

Eligibility depends on non-resident status and the official immigration or documentary conditions, not just whether you have a residence card. Other specified categories, such as eligible diplomats, official personnel and landing-permit holders, are listed in the Japan Tourism Agency's eligibility table for purchases from November 1.

Japanese nationals temporarily returning from overseas may also qualify if they are non-residents, have continuously maintained an address or residence outside Japan for at least two years, and have been back in Japan for less than six months.
